After searching long and hard at the shelters, through the newspaper and even enlisting friends and family in your search, you've found the right puppy! So what's next? Giving him/her a proper name of course!

So you think to yourself, just any 'ol name won't do. It's got to be unique, something different! Well, allow me to give you a few dog naming categories that will hopefully help you to come up with some really novel names for your four legged friend.

First though, when coming up with a name keep in mind a few things to watch out for.

- Stay away from names that might be potentially embarrassing to both you AND your dog. The name "Stinky" might be cute at first, but once the joke gets old, think of how you'll feel a year from now when you have to call "Stinky" home at night. Embarrassing names could also apply to negative words that might rhyme with your dogs name.

- There's been a tendency in recent years to give dogs human names. Though there's nothing wrong with this, be kind to your pooch and name him after someone you like. Also, if want to name him after someone you know, better check with that person first to see if it's alright. I'm not sure how much your human friend Max will like hearing, "Get off the couch Max!" or worse "We took Max to get fixed today."

- If possible, keep the name to one or two syllables. Dogs not only learn it quicker, but it makes them easier to train as well.
On with the names!...

In this article I've listed just 3 of the many dog name categories that might help you to think a bit outside the box when coming up with great puppy names. They are...

Unique Dog Names: Have you ever considered naming your dog after something that you eat or drink? I'm serious. Allow me to give you just a few examples that will hopefully get your creative juices flowing... Bon Bon: I can see this as a good name for a small black dog. Caviar: For a dog with expensive tastes. Maybe a good Poodle name? Jalapeño: A good name for a dog with a sometimes fiery disposition. Crouton: Another good name for a small breed. Maybe a Chihuahua? Latte: Possibly a good name for a black dog. Kahlua: I can see this name on a brown dog.

As strange as it sounds, many more food and drink related dog names can be as close as your refrigerator, pantry or liquor cabinet!

Cool Dog Names: The dictionary defines the word "cool" as something that's fashionable, or hip. To me, when it comes to dog names, a name that's "cool" is a name that one doesn't normally hear. One that is creative enough to be memorable. And that perhaps matches that particular dogs appearance or disposition. Here's just a few names from my site that I put into the "cool" dog name category for starters...

Aspen, Azure, Capri, Charisma, Denali, Java, Mahala, Maui, Mignon, Nirvana, Pirouette, Rio, Sahara, Sierra, Taboo, Tiara.

Funny Dog Names: By funny, I'm referring to cute dog names that will match it's physical appearance. Here's just a few ideas... Espresso: For an energetic black dog. Kisses: For a small affectionate pup. Brutus: For a BIG dog. Putt-Putt: For a dog with short legs.

Here's some additional ideas...

Big Dog Names: Barbarian, Big Foot, Butkus, Chewbacca, Genghis, Godzilla, Hummer, Terminator, T-Rex, Tsunami

Small Dog Names: Doodle, Gumball, Kewpie, Laptop, Nibbles, Widget

For additional funny ideas, think opposites! Peanut for a BIG dog, Moose for a small dog.
As you can see, it's easy to find http://www.dog-names-and-more.com/unique-dog-names.html unique dog names and considering that your dogs name will be used an estimated 15,000 times during her lifetime, isn't she worth taking a little extra time to pick a perfect name?

When Richard Livitski isn't busy running around after his own dogs, he's busy searching for more unique, cool and funny dog names for http://www.dog-names-and-more.com/ where dog names as well as other helpful dog related topics can be found.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Richard_Livitski http://EzineArticles.com/?Clever-Dog-Names-and-Puppy-Names---Find-Unique-Dog-Names-That-Fit&id=300272

Secrets to Dog Training - Dog Training To Stop Your Dog Behavioral Problems!

Mary D. It's just like the arrival of a new baby! If there are kids in the family, then the event is even more thrilling. Hopefully, you have done your homework and read books on the subject and know all about the responsibilities of owning a new pet.

There's only one thing left to be done: finding the perfect name for your puppy.
How do you find the perfect name for your dog? Ideally, it should reflect its character, and even its physical appearance. If you already have a name in your mind because that's the one you have always dreamed for your dog, then congratulations. Your job is easy. If you don't have a name in mind, this will take some thinking, and even-as it was in our case-an official family meeting!

Would you like to name your dog like a famous philosopher-Homer, Plato, or Aristotle? Or perhaps like a famous scientist, like Einstein or Mr. Hawking? What about a biblical name like Noah? Or maybe a goofy name like Wacky or Taffy? Or even a food name, like Honey or Cinnamon? What about a common name like Sam, Max, or Lady?

In my children's picture book, CRASH, five-year old Marcelo sets out to find the perfect name for his new golden retriever puppy. His parents keep making suggestions, but Marcelo refuses, as he must find not just any name, but the perfect name for his beloved new puppy. Finally, something really peculiar about the puppy helps Marcelo come up with the perfect name.
So observe your puppy carefully. Maybe it has a quirk or odd character trait which belongs only to it, and one which will help you come up with the ideal name.

There are hundreds of sites online to help you choose the perfect dog name. Just do a search for 'dog names' on Google.

Ideally, the name you give your puppy should be short (one or two syllables), and should not sound like another member of the family's or like a dog command, for obvious reasons. But this isn't a rule and in reality, the sky is the limit.

Have fun finding that perfect name and good luck!

Mayra Calvani is a multi-genre author, reviewer, dog lover, and animal advocate.
A regular contributor to Blogcritics Magazine and American Chronicle, she is also the author of CRASH!, a children's picture book about a little boy and how he learns to care and find the perfect name for his new golden retriever puppy. Should we pick a traditional dog name like Boots or Sheba? Maybe we should opt for a human name like Harvey or Jenny.

The "traditional" camp claims that a dog is not a human being and should never be given a human name. The question then arises: After what should our dog be named? I thought we could name our dog after some piece of food. After all, eating would be one of our dog's primary functions. Biscuit didn't seem like a bad name. Strawberry was another suggestion. Or we could combine those thoughts and name our dog, Shortcake. Since we are considering a larger dog, that idea was abandoned.

The "human" supporters will argue that the dog is "one of the family" and should be given a name like any other family member. It is true that we often treat our pets just like human beings--sometimes maybe even better. However, while names like Maynard and Merlin are used for dogs, I have a hard time imagining that we would still give one of those names to a human being!

I suppose we could say that "human" dog names have a certain flare about them. If we are inclined towards historical figures, we might name our dog Caesar or Napoleon. We might want to consider, however, if the name is a reflection of our dog's personality. Maybe Napoleon would be fitting for a miniature dog breed, but then the historical Napoleon might not have the kind of personality we are looking for in a family dog.

If we are patriotic, we might find dogs named after American presidents to our liking. We could name our dog Lincoln or Jefferson. (This assumes a high intelligence or moral character in our dog. Yeah, right!) How do the names Nixon and Hoover sound? We will want to be careful that we do not pick a name that is confusing to our family members. If mom says, "Take Hoover outside," we might have the only child in the city walking the vacuum cleaner.

The same problem might exist if we give our dog a very common human name, like Mike, for example. Some people might confuse Mike with one of our children. Or the neighbor's kid--also named Mike-- may never want to come over to our house if "mom" is always telling Mike to stop whining and behave. Then there is the hassle of getting junk mail and credit card applications in Mike's name. Hmm- I wonder what his credit score would be!

Finally, after all the discussions and agonizing, I thought we finally had a solution. Our daughter suggested that we name the new puppy after a cartoon character, like Snoopy or Goofy. "No," my wife said, "those are your father's nicknames."

"At last!" I suggested, "We could get two dogs and name them "Harry" and "Potter". Oops, I just opened another can of worms! http://www.your-pets-and-mine.blogspot.com/

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Dale_Klessig http://EzineArticles.com/?What-Should-We-Name-Our-New-Dog?&id=1247174

Secrets to Dog Training - Dog Training To Stop Your Dog Behavioral Problems!

Mary D. So what's next?… Finding the perfect dog name of course!

Considering that over the course of your puppies lifetime his name will be used over 30,000 times, and that 1 in 5 new dog owners want to change their dogs name in the first year, choosing the right puppy name should be given as much care and thought as you showed when finding your pooch in the first place.

Below I've listed 10 dog naming tips taken from my website to be mindful of when looking for the right name, they are…

1. Avoid names that sound like common commands such as Go, Stay, Sit, etc. This might cause confusion for your puppy when trying to train it.

2. Be mindful that your dog might outgrow it’s name. The name Buttercup might be appropriate for a cute puppy, but not when it becomes a full grown Great Dane!

3. Choose a name with one or two syllables. Dogs not only learn it quicker, but it makes them easier to train as well.

4. Watch out for trendy names that might cause embarrassment once the trend is passed. Do you want people to realize from your dog’s name that you were once a big fan of Disco?

5. If you’ve adopted an older dog, it’s best to keep her current name so that it doesn’t become confused. If for some reason you must change it, consider a name that sounds similar or rhymes.

6. Beware of the common trend to name dogs after people. Though doing so is not a bad thing in itself, if you name your pup after a friend or family member, they might take offense. Although you might think naming your dog Sally after your favorite Aunt is an honor, Aunt Sally might not. Also, be kind to your dog and name her after someone you like.

7. Does the dog name rhyme with something negative? Or maybe with the name of a family member or friend? Once discovered, you might be one of those 1 in 5 people who want to change their dogs name!

8. Stay away from potentially embarrassing names. The name “Pee Wee” might be funny at first, but as the joke gets old, how will you feel in a year or so when you have to call “Pee Wee” home at night?

9. Pick a name that matches your dogs own unique appearance or personality. The name Electra might be a good name for an energetic pooch, but not for one that like’s to sleep all day.

10. Ask your dog what he thinks! Since it’s going to be his name, you might want to narrow your search down to your own 5 favorite names, then try them out on your dog. You’d be surprised how well he responds to some, yet yawns at others.
Keeping in mind the above tips when searching for dog names will not only ensure a long, happy friendship with your dog, but also help to avoid a mid-life name change.

When Richard Livitski isn't busy running around after his own dogs, he's busy searching for more unique, cool and funny dog names for http://www.dog-names-and-more.com where dog names as well as other helpful dog related topics can be found.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Richard_Livitski http://EzineArticles.com/?Dog-Names:-Choosing-The-Right-One,-The-First-Time&id=306666

Secrets to Dog Training - Dog Training To Stop Your Dog Behavioral Problems!

Mary D. While you can have all the "creative license" in the world when naming a pet, picking that perfect and creative dog name - one that will be used thousands of times over your dog's lifetime - can seem a little overwhelming if you have no idea what direction to go in.

For starters, folks usually search "Top Dog Names" or "Popular Dog Names" and come up with:

For the Boys:
Max, Jake, Buddy, Bailey, Sam, Rocky, Buster, Casey, Cody, Duke, Charlie, Jack, Harley, Rusty, Toby, Murphy, Shelby, Sparky, Barney and Winston

For the Girls:
Maggie, Mollie, Lady, Sadie, Lucy, Daisy, Ginger, Abby, Sasha, Sandy, Dakota, Katie, Annie, Chelsea, Princess, Missy, Sophie, Bo, Coco and Tasha

These are great names and would work no matter what kind of dog you have and no matter what your dog's personality. However, chances are, there are already quite a few Sams, Maggies, Jakes and Daisies in your neighborhood. If you want to express both you and your dog's uniqueness, more searching and brainstorming will have to come into play.

When brainstorming the perfect dog name, all you have to do is start thinking about your favorite "whatevers" - your favorite cartoon characters, favorite car, favorite sports figure, favorite actor...you get the picture. Make a list of these favorites and pick your dog's name from there.

You can also start to search specific names of royalty, angels, Greek gods and goddesses, famous cartoon dogs or famous dogs in film to find a cool name for your dog. If your dog is of German origin, search "German Royalty" or "German Names" to find a fitting handle for your new furry friend with roots in der Vaterland. Into angels? There's probably an angelic name out there with a meaning that perfectly suits your new little fuzzy cherub.

The sky is the limit (for the most part) when picking a name. Since your dog will never have to apply for a job at IBM, run for president or be the head cheerleader, something a little different and quirky is totally fine. You just want to be sure the name you choose for your dog is something you, him and the whole family can live with - and hear over and over and over - in the years to come.

For more tips, hints, pointers and a list of *thousands* of dog names, download your free copy of
The World's Most Colossal Book of Dog Names at http://www.the-dog-shack.com/dognames.htm - you'll be well on your way to finding that perfect name for your dog!
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Lisa_M_Ross http://EzineArticles.com/?Dog-Names---Find-the-Perfect-Name-for-Your-Dog&id=982567

Mary D. Choosing a name for your dog is something that many people enjoy but others find it to be rather frustrating. It is usually best if they try to find out what the popular dog names are in order to give them a little bit of direction. Not only can they save them some of the frustration of deciding on a dog name, they may actually be able to think of one that they would not have considered otherwise.

According to some websites, the most popular dog names are Buddy, Max, Sadie, Jack, Daisy, Lucy, Lady, Charlie, Rocky and Duke.

Of course, there are thousands of dog names that you can choose from, one of which is sure to make you happy. There are several different things that many people take into consideration whenever they are choosing a dog name. Although this may take them away from deciding on one of the popular dog names, it can fit the breed or the particular dog very well.

It is very important for your dog to be named early in life. This will help it to be able to recognize its name, which many of them will do very quickly. It still doesn't hurt for you to have the dog around for a little while before you finally settling on a name. Some people have a name in mind and they may have been waiting for many years to call a dog by that name. Other people, however, like to watch the dog and learn a little bit about its personality before finally deciding to settle in and name the dog. It really is a personal choice on your part but by giving the dog an interesting name, one that fits in well with its breed and personality, you can draw back on that every time you call it.

You should also keep in mind that you will be using the name multiple times every day. In fact, many people use the name of their dog more often than they use the name of their own children. If you avoid giving your dog a very long name, you can avoid using a nickname which you will eventually do anyway. So, it's a good idea to look at the popular dog names in order to choose a name and use it as a guide to find the perfect name for your pet.

Find thousands of dog names and more http://www.favorite-puppy-names.com/popular-dog-names.html popular dog names at http://www.favorite-puppy-names.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jennifer_McVey http://EzineArticles.com/?Dog-Names---Most-Popular-Dog-Names&id=1163797

Mary D. Why do we put so much effort into choosing what we name our dog anyway? Well, it actually is quite important. I mean, if you are going to be calling your dog by that name day in and day out for the next several years it should be something good right?

You could consider regular people names such as Beth or Mikey. There have also been owners who have named their dogs after movie stars such as the good ole Lassie and of course, who can forget The Beast from the movie The Sand Lot?

The great thing about dog names is that they are not held to the strict standards that human names are. You have much more creative freedom for coming up with something truly unique. So make sure you take advantage of this and choose a dog name that people will be talking about.

You can of course choose a dog name that will describe the attributes of your dog such as Killer, Tiny, Timid, Sharp Tooth, Beast and Giant. There is also the option of just going with something plain and normal such as Spot, Rover or Fido.

You know what would be hilarious? Naming a huge dog something that makes it sound small and harmless and naming a tiny dog something that makes it sound huge and ferocious. That is what is so great about naming a dog, there is no rules holding you back. The sky is the limit.
A friend of mine had quite a creative name for her dog. He was black and white and was named Oreo, which fit him perfectly. On the other hand, my mother has a Black Lab that she named Sadie so you really do have many options.

You can literally name your dog after anyone or anything. Ranging from disliked relatives to childhood friends to even super heroes, foods, cities or anything else you can think of.
Just make sure you are never ashamed to use the name you choose for your dog when out in public. This is why profanity and other degrading words are not the best to use for dog names.

Make sure to visit http://www.howtotraindogs.org/ How To Train Dogs and http://www.trainingapuppy.net/ Training A Puppy for great advice and techniques including http://www.howtotraindogs.org/dog-potty-training.html Dog Potty Training. Animals usually respond better to names comprising of no more than two syllables. The name you choose says as much about you as it does about your pet; don’t burden your new puppy (and yourself ultimately), with what I call “clever” names. It may be extremely chic to name your new puppy Slobber Tongue, but how embarrassed will you feel standing in the middle of the dog park calling him?

The name you choose goes a long way in indicating the relationship you have with the pet in question. The name very often determines how strangers react when encountering it for the first time. As an example, if your Rottweiler is called Killer, you should expect strangers to react negatively and maybe even fearfully when meeting it.

Also, when naming a dog, be especially careful not to pick a name that sounds like any of the standard commands you will be using: Sit, Fetch, No, Down, Stay, etc. As an example, to a dog "No" sounds the same as "Joe"; “Mit” sounds too much like “Sit”. It is difficult for dogs to distinguish between similar sounding words. If you do select a longer name, visualize what the shortened version - that you'll end up using daily - is likely to be.

The pet’s breed heritage often provides good inspiration. For example English names (Bulldogs, Lakelands, Airedales), French names (Poodles), Scottish names (Terriers), Oriental names (Siamese and Burmese), German names (Shepherds, Pinschers, Dachshunds and Schnauzers) and Irish names (Spaniels, Wolfhounds and Setters).

Pause for a moment and think about the last few pet names you heard. Did the names stand out? Did they convey a good description of the pet? Were they unique and easily distinguishable from other words and did they have meaning? These are all important considerations to think about when choosing a perfect name.

Currently the most popular dog names are Sam, Sammie or Samantha (meaning "listener"), Max, Maxie, Maxwell or Maxine (meaning "the greatest"). Following these are Bear, Buddy Lady, Maggie, Tasha, Chelsea, Holly and Shasta. Popular cat names are Brandy, Amber, Ginger and Taffy.

Anne Pottinger is the owner, director and publisher of [http://www.4petsonline.com]4PetsOnline.com a pet and domestic animal website with a difference. Ears flopping, tail wagging like a flag behind them, their little paws reaching as far as they can while their long body flexes back and forth like a slinky.

Can you imagine yourself in that grassy field with your little Dachshund by your side? He runs to chase a butterfly and when you get ready to call him back to you, anticipating the sight of him with those floppy ears and happy tail, you call out his name and it’s the best name ever for a little wiener dog. But what is it?

Do you have that name for your little dog? Or are you still looking for the perfect Dachshund name?

If you want an unusual, unique, different and well thought-out dachshund dog name that is carefully considered and researched especially for the wonderful qualities of your little wiener dogs, you’re going to have to think out of the long, hot-dog shaped box. There are many obvious dachshund dog names, but here are some ways to think of names that are special. You want a dog name that your friends are impressed by the answer when they ask you what it means!
There are several areas to look at when naming your dachshund: morphology, behavior, German words, famous dachshunds, and generally cool dog names.

Morphology refers to the form or structure of anything, including your dachshund. Their unique, elongated shape has led to many nicknames for the breed including wiener dog and hot dog. There are many obvious plays on this, such as male dog names such as Oscar (after the hot dog brand), but for a more unique approach, look in the dictionary for synonyms of words such as long, or stretchy.

Another aspect of dachshund morphology is their lovely caramel brown color. There are many wonderful variations on the name of the color brown, such as Amber or Russet, which would make great dachshund names. Again, try the thesaurus and start with the word brown to see where that leads you. Don’t forget foreign language words. Spanish is a beautiful language with especially good words that work as a dog name.

German names are also an obvious choice for a breed that originates in Germany and still maintains their German breed name. Dachshund means “badger dog” in their native land’s language. While German can be a harsh sounding language with long, multi-syllabic words, there are still many words and names that can make a great dog name. Use the Babelfish translator to check words that describe your dog such as “sweet” or “gentle” or “beautiful” to see how they sound in German. Or, search out web pages that have German word vocabulary lists to see what appeals to you.

While Dachshunds tend to not be quite as famous as some other breeds, there are still some who are well known – if not with everyone, at least with other Dachshund fans. And, while the dogs themselves weren’t famous – many of their owners are. See if your favorite actor, artist, or writer had a Dachshund and take a cue from them. Even tough guy John Wayne had a tiny little wiener dog! Try a search for “famous Dachshunds” to see what you can find.

For generally cool dog names, for Dachshunds or any dog, try famous dogs from literature. Again, a search for “dogs in literature” will bring up a wealth of sites and ideas. Another source of great names is Greek mythology, along with Egyptian and Roman. Movies can also provide great names. Look for characters that remind you of your little wiener. Hobbits in particular seem to resemble Dachshunds in that they are small but sturdy and playful yet diligent.

Don’t forget that there's a reason Dachshunds are in the top ten of all dog breeds as ranked by the AKC (they were number 6 in popularity in 2006) Everyone loves them so take great care in giving yours a memorable and important name. And you know, they are like potato chips – you can’t stop at just one! So take the time to find a great Dachshund names. You never know when there will be a new addition to your household.

© 2007 Beth Bridges. Beth Bridges has been a Dachshund owner for over five years now. Most people rush into this task, but should take a bit more time.

Got A Dog Name?

One of the more hilarious names for a pup I have ever run across was Dioji. A neighbor of mine had a mutt by this name and absolutely loved the pup. Frankly, I think the dog lived better than he did. One lazy day, I asked him where he came up with such an exotic name for the pet and what it meant. He looked at me like I was an idiot and told me to say the name slowly. D..o..g.

Notwithstanding this humorous approach, it is important to give some thought to naming you pup since it is going to most likely be permanent. If you are thinking about popular names, there are more than a few for pups. Popular names for male dogs include Max, Bud, Rusty, Tucker and so on. For females, names such as Lucy, Tessie, Missy and so on are also popular. You can’t really go wrong with such names, but some pet owners want something a bit more unique.

When it comes to unique names for your pup, the key is to make sure you understand what the name means. While an exotic name sounds great, you can feel a little silly when someone tells you the name means “stove” in another language.

An interesting approach to picking a name is to look to historical figures. The names tend to be catch and most people with recognize them. You can even match them to the nature of your dog if you have it figured out. Names such as Sherlock for Sherlock Holmes, Van Gogh and so on are certainly acceptable.

Picking a name for your pup is a very personal decision. If you get flustered, you can always go with Dioji!

John Grimes is with All Terrain - makers of http://www.allterrainco.com/natural_pet_products.html natural pet products for the outdoors.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=John_Grimes http://EzineArticles.com/?Got-A-Dog-Name&id=397888

Mary D. How words sound is important to them, so consider that then choosing names and commands. To your dog, the words "No," "Know," "Beau" and "Joe" are the same sound; the dog will have trouble knowing which you mean. If you name him "Beau" and use "No!" as a reprimand, saying, "Beau, you know what I want!" reprimands him twice although you didn't intend a single one!

You always want your dog to come to you when you call him, so how much sense does it make to name your dog "Beau" and use "NO!" as your reprimand? He'll have trouble knowing whether you called him or yelled at him.

I like to have a dog choose his name. There are two ways to do this. First, spend enough time with the dog to really get to know his personality and select a suitable name. For example, when new to us my Husky-mix not only jumped on me, he pinned me to the wall and took stuff out of my shirt pocket! I said to my wife: "Look at this! I'm getting mugged!" Naturally, he became Mugger! A client had a very rambunctious Great Dane pup and I love the name she chose: Chaos! Let the dog earn his name!

Another way is to make a list of your favorite names and--in a playful and animated voice--try them on the dog. The one to which the dog reacts best is IT! And he WILL react differently to different names! Try it!

Contrary to popular belief, a dog's name should change with every new owner. The old thought was that once a dog recognized hits name, you couldn't or shouldn't change it. Wrong! Since many owners make the mistake of using the name with a reprimand, or even AS the reprimand, if you keep the old name you tell the dog you're one of THEM--the former crew.

If the dog is now yours, you can't presume former owners did everything right. If they did, you probably wouldn't have him. And you're trying to tell the dog this is a new start in a new home, right? Then why use the old name--especially when it was likely used negatively in the past?
Be sure to teach the dog his new name by using it only with things the dog likes such as treats, praise, meals and love and affection. And don’t choose a new name that sounds a lot like the old one, like “Bo” and “Noah”.

Use the new name consistently and positively ONLY with things the dog likes and within a week or two he should respond nicely. We changed the names of two of our dogs and now they ignore the old names.

The author, Dennis Fetko, Ph.D., "Dr. Dog", is a world-reknowned animal behaviorist whose accomplishments range from appearing on the 20/20 television show and managing the reintroduction of captive-bred Arabian Oryx into the Saudi Arabian National Wildlife Research Center to making a presentation at the South American Veterinary Congress. Most owners love to give their dogs a name that is very human like. For instance, Matthew or Andrew. Others will want to give the name based on their favorite movie characters or the book they read. For instance, Black Beauty or Cholera (although they are quite strange they are still real dog names). Discovering the best dog names for your best friend can be difficult although it should not and can be even fun.

The biggest problem stands in the fact that we have a lot of possible choices and there is a big chance that you are looking for an unique dog name. You want one that will suit the dog's personality while avoiding names that can be harmful. The key is making it fun. The dog name you choose will be utilized around 25 thousand times during the animal's lifetime so it should be nice that your dog agrees to the name you are going to give him. Let us think about a cool dog name for your friend. There are many ways to handle this. The good news is that there are hundreds of sites online that will help you in choosing by simply giving you a huge list of dog names. Let us think about some examples.

In the US the two most popular dog names for boys are Max and Jake. Female dog names of choice sum up to Molly and Maggie as the most popular. You might not want a popular dog name and you might want a celebrity dog name, although it does sound strange to have a dog named Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Ben Afleck or The Undertaker. You could also choose your dog's name by breed. For instance, popular names for Labrador Retrievers are Heidi, India or Jade. For Germen Shepherds popularity stands in Action, Bruno or Fantom. Cool unique dog names stand in Brownie, Caviar, Pretzel or Okra. It is up to you to choose and decide where to go with your dog's name. Your dog has powerful jaws full of sharp, pointy teeth: just about anything she starts to chew on is probably going to show the effects of it inside of a minute. So to clarify things, when I use the term “destructive chewing”, I’m referring to inappropriate chewing: the kind of chewing that destroys your own possessions and household items, rather than your dog’s designated toys and chews.

Three basic reasons why dogs chew:

- Most dogs have a natural desire to chew. It’s fun, it passes the time, and it’s a self-rewarding, reinforcing activity (for example, if he's chewing on something that tastes good.)

- Chewing may provide a nervous, bored, or lonely dog with an emotional outlet. To an anxious dog, the repetitive act of chewing may be soothing – it’s like the dog equivalent of a comfort food.
-Underexercised dogs may use chewing as a way of burning up nervous energy and as an outlet for activity.

- How to prevent destructive chewing -

Dogs are capable of learning not to chew your possessions – you just have to put in a little effort to instruct them, that’s all.

1. Take control of the situation: manage your possessions. The first step should be to dog-proof your home. Even if you have the best-behaved dog in the world, there’s still no reason to test his self-control – remember, dogs naturally explore the world with their mouths.

Dog-proofing means making your prized possessions, unavailable. Consider her size and agility when deciding whether something’s out of reach: can she jump? Can she climb, or leap onto something else to reach the desired object? How tall is she when standing on her back legs?

Common targets of opportunity in the home may include books, eyewear, clothing, shoes, garbage, and small crunchy appliances like cameras, cell phones, remote controls and of course, food.

It should go without saying that all food needs to be put securely away: don’t leave snacks on low tables (or even countertops – you’d be surprised how acrobatic she can be when there’s food at stake!), put all food into containers or the pantry. Rinse your dirty plates clean of any food scraps before leaving them by the sink.

2. Prevent her from learning the joys of illegal chewing. The more times she manages to snatch a jawful of a forbidden substance – a chair-leg, a pillow, a running shoe – the more readily she’ll target those items in future. If you can prevent her from chewing your possessions, in the first place, the easier for her to understand what you expect . Practically speaking, this means confining her in a dog-proofed area until you’re confident of her understanding of the house rules.

3. Don’t set her up for failure by blurring the boundaries between her stuff (OK to chew) and your stuff (not OK to chew). Don’t offer your dog cast-off clothing, shoes, or towels to chew and play with: realistically, you can’t possibly expect her to be able to tell the difference between your current shoes and the one she’s got in her mouth that you gave her five minutes ago.

4. Provide lots of tasty alternatives to your possessions. If her environment is relatively devoid of attractive, appropriate chewing objects, you can hardly blame her for targeting your stuff. Remember, most dogs need to chew; if she’s an adolescent (under three years) or a puppy (under one year), her needs will be even more pronounced. Go on a toy and chew shopping spree, then give her two or three to play with at a time. Rotating the available toys every few days will keep things novel and interesting.

5. Spend time in active supervision. Yes, it might be easier for you to just keep her penned up in her crate, run, or the yard – but that’s boring and bad for her, and hardly much fun for you either (if you wanted a pet that you don’t need to interact with, you could have gotten a goldfish, right?) She can’t learn what's expected of her, if she’s spending all her time boxed up in the dog-proof zone: she needs the opportunity to explore the boundaries of your expectations, so she can understand what’s appropriate and what’s not.

6. When you catch her chewing something inappropriate, interrupt her by making a loud noise: clap your hands or make an “Ah-ah-aaaah!” noise. Then, immediately hand her a tasty and dog-appropriate alternative (a rawhide bone or other chew toy); as soon as her jaws close around it, praise her lavishly. There is no better way to get your dog to understand that chewing “her” toys equals praise from you, but everything else equals trouble.

- Always maintain a productive attitude -

Above all, remember to keep realistic expectations.. You’re not perfect, and neither is your dog: there’s likely to be at least one incident where a cherished item is damaged by her curiosity.
Particularly in the early stages of your relationship, while she’s still learning the ropes: it’ll take awhile before she’s completely reliable (and even then, if she’s left by herself for too long, or feels neglected, she may revert to choosing your stuff over hers, to occupy her time and jaws with.) Remember give her time to learn the rules, and plenty of ‘you-time’ to help her learn faster – and don’t forget to take precautions and keep things out of reach until she’s got the hang of the chewing rules!

For more information on dog training techniques and how to deal with problem dog behavior (like chewing), check out SitStayFetch. Not just any name, but a cute, cool and unique dog name. Well, there’s nothing better or more of a fit than a good ole’ redneck name for this working class canine. A solid name representing the bedrock of America.

The pitbull/ lab cross (I’ve named it the "pull-tab") seems to be one of the most common residents of the shelter these days, as if it were destined to become the All American, generic dog. What better way to embrace its newfound stature, than to give it an All-American redneck name? No over pampered little darlings here!

After all, the origins and characteristics of this canine fit well with that of the well grounded redneck world and therefore with redneck names. Who can resist a little "Bubba" or "Flo", for instance? These are names of character, which separate the "real dogs" from their soft, elitist, pedigreed kin.

Starting with some solid and popular male, redneck, dog names, how about some of these for starters: Billy-Bob (Bill-Bob for short), Bo (or Beau), Cletis, Wade, Elrod, Eustice, Buck, Buddy (or Bud), Coy, and Bodean?

For the females, some of the more popular redneck names include: Amaleen, Angel, Bambi, and Daisy. Some others according to our redneck sources would be: Baylee (perfect for the beagle mix), Betty-Lou, Bobby-Jo, Candi, Cherry, Clarice, Claudette, Claudine, Desiree and Dakota.

Although we’ve barely scraped the surface here, this list should help get you thinking about the perfect redneck name for your new puppy. Oh well, it’s time to put on the Carharrts and run down the road to the Tractor Supply store, for the bag of "Old Roy" puppy chow.

Copyright 2008. All rights reserved. Then you are probably trying to figure out a good name for him or her. While picking a good dog name is not as critical as naming a human baby, you’ll be saying that name thousands of times over the next decade-plus, so you’ll want to make sure his name is a good fit for both of you. Here are some tips to help you pick a name you’ll be happy with.
Keep it Short and Sweet

Short names of one or two syllables usually work best, and it’s wise to avoid names that could be confused with commands (such as “no” and “Noah.”). Dogs sometimes have difficulty distinguishing our words, and longer names are both harder for you to say and harder for your dog to comprehend. Also, we often use our dog’s name as part of a command, such as “Leroy, let’s go,” so it helps to have a name that is easy to call out.

Personality Comes into Play

Try spending some time with your dog to get to know his or her personality and traits before you pick a name. Sometimes your dog’s behavior, personality, or appearance will suggest a name.

Popular vs Unique Name

The most popular dog names today include Sam, Max, Lady, Maggie, Buddy, Brandy, Lucy, Daisy, and Ginger. But maybe you want something more unique. Some people like to name their dog after a character from their favorite book, movie, or TV show, a historical figure, or mythological character (Hercules, for example). Others name their dog after their favorite song, food or drink (such as Cosmo), color, car, or sports team. Also popular is picking a name reflecting the dog breed’s origin, like Olga for a Russian Wolfhound, or Ming for a Shih Tzu, a breed originating in China.

There are endless possibilities. Remember that you will be calling your dog often, so pick a name that you can be happy with for the long term. You can find sources for good dog names online or in dog books from your library or bookstore.

Try Out Your Favorite Names

Once you’ve narrowed down the names to a few favorites, make a list and try them out one at a time. Say the name out loud. Does it sound pleasing? Silly? Is it easy to say? Try the name out on your dog. Does he or she suit it? It can be hard to come up with just the right name and you may go through several before you find the right one for your new four-legged pal. My friends got a new puppy and named her “Annie.” It was a nice name, but they quickly realized it wasn’t a good fit for her. They renamed her “Layla,” after the Eric Clapton song, and it suited her personality, and theirs, much better.

Teach Your Dog His Name

Use your dog’s name as frequently as possible and give him lots of positive reinforcement (yummy treats) when he responds. He’ll quickly learn his name.

Keep it Positive

Remember to always use your dog’s name in a positive way, never in anger or in conjunction with reprimand. Your dog should know that when you call his name good things happen. Your dog wants to please you. The sound of his name should invoke enthusiasm, never fear or the impression he did something bad.

Valerie Goettsch is webmaster of http://www.my-favorite-dog.com featuring articles and information on http://www.my-favorite-dog.com/dog-names.htm good dog names, dog beds, pet meds and more.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Valerie_Goettsch http://EzineArticles.com/?How-to-Pick-a-Good-Dog-Name:-Finding-a-Unique-and-Fun-Name-for-Your-Pet&id=327576

Mary D. Other distinctive male names could include, Carlo (free man), Alessandro (protector/helper), or perhaps Ciro (comes from Cyrus the Persian ruler), or Pancrazio (supreme ruler).

Not only are these names distinctive, but often times equally befitting, such as Zanebono (good one) or Claudio (lame one).

Some other great names for males would include: Angelo, Antonio, Dante, Dino, Emilio, Enzo, Enrico, Ermano, Fedele, Federico,Geronimo and Giacomo. Let’s not leave out these beauties either: Uberto, Ugo, Taddeo and Santo.

Now as far as the petite female puppy goes, we have some equally chic female names, such as Aldabella (beautiful), or Bambalina (little girl). Other cool names include Venitia (mercy) and Zola (little ball of earth). As with the males, there are many such to chose from and some of my other favorites include: Amadora, Bianca, Trilby, Carmela, Esta, Felice, Jolanda, Lia, Phebe, Quorra, Rosseta and Vanni.

If you should happen to have both a male and female pup, how about naming them Fedele and Felice or Ugo and Vanni? Great names for great dogs go hand-in-hand. Some of these would also be perfect for the rescue you adopted from the shelter.

By greg marlett. However, there are actually bad names for dogs and these are the ones you want to avoid. So while there really is no definite formula in measuring the appropriateness of a dog’s name, here are some pointers to guide you in your name selection.

Pointers for dog name selection

First, think of a name that is easy to say or pronounce. If you end up choosing a name that you yourself can’t say properly, then how will your dog be able to understand you? Moreover, for practicality sakes it is best to give your dog a name you can easily repeat day in and day out. Also, in times of emergencies (heaven forbid) you may need to call on your dog and a difficult name to pronounce may actually be much harder to say in times of stress.

Second, stick to one name. There is no use giving your dog two or three names like you would give a child. Moreover, this will confuse your dog so stick to one that you and your dog can actually remember. You never know; you might end up being more confused with your dog’s name than your dog is with his name.

Third, avoid choosing names that are used for commands such as go, sit, stand, heel, jump, and the like. Training your dog to respond to such commands will be difficult if you name him after a command you expect your dog to follow.

Fourth, choosing a name which consists of one or two syllables is also recommended. This is easier understood by dogs so learning it will be also a breeze for your pet.
Fifth, don’t pick out a name which may have a negative meaning or implication. Saying the dog’s name which is negative in nature will most likely be said in a negative manner as well. Moreover, chances are you won’t be the only one calling your dog by his name so you might want to look for other alternatives. Names which are too embarrassing to say are also out of the question. Dogs are smart animals. You never know; they just might get a hint of the negative appeal of the name that you have chosen.

Finally, once you’ve decided on a name for your dog, you can’t really change it unless you want the dog to end up being confused. Once you have chosen a name and used it, stick to it or your dog may end up in the doggieland’s equivalent of a mental asylum.

With that said, let me say that you should find naming your dog fun. After all it is your companion and your best friend that you’re naming.

Do you want to know more about http://www.1800bestbuy.com/dog.php dog care or anything about the crazy world of dogs? then visit us http://www.1800bestbuy.com/dog.php here

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Eric_Hartwell http://EzineArticles.com/?The-Art-of-Choosing-a-Dogs-Name&id=441267

Mary D. You May Be Surprised At The Answer! by Ian Hollander

In this article we are going to take a quick look at your pet pooch, and see if our favorite four legged friends really DO have an extra set of sensational senses as it pertains to their human housemates! So read on as we explore the fascinating intersection between science and psychic phenomena, only this time, from the perspective of the animal kingdom rather than our own!

As I have intimated in previous articles, there is a tremendous interest in the the fertile philosophy of psychic abilities and animals. Why? It's quite simple. Many pet owners report an uncanny and often times ineffable connection with their pets that seemingly transcends the simple and obvious love that is obviously apparent. Pets can often display stunning signs of a deeper understanding of things that if accepted, modern scientific paradigms are simply at a loss to explain away.

For example, most pet owners will acknowledge that when it comes to a favorite activity, your dog will actually "sense" something special is about to happen, EVEN when you offer no outward sign that this is upcoming. Can your dog differentiate between you getting ready to go to work, rather than preparing for a walk with him? If so, how? Are you offering cues and clues that would lend themselves to a heightened sense of awareness in the animal, or are they simply able to tap into some sort of something that we can't quite put our collective fingers on?

And how about the dogs, and cats I may add, that sense death? Numerous cases have been reported of this strange phenomena in hospital and hospice settings where an animal with visit the room of someone whose appointment with the hereafter is close...and stay with them until they go. Or what about the reports of animals fleeing the tragic Tsunami several years ago a day in advance of the event? While their human counterparts were blissfully unaware of what was upcoming, some scientific studies have opined that tens of thousands of animals of all types and stripes made a mass exodus from the shoreline well in advance of the crushing wave that swept over an unsuspecting and unprepared human population alone.

And of courts there are the ongoing studies being conducted on simple pet owners like you and I, where the dogs are actually filmed while we are at work....and when the owner starts the process of returning home, the "dogs on film" start to show very strange behavior, as if they KNOW their owners are coming home! And this is not the sound of a car, or a set schedule, or any other obvious giveaway...rather, well tested and implemented scientific protocols to ensure an accurate and unbiased basis to examine. Rupert Sheldrake, the famed biologist known for his writings and research into ESP and many other scientific topics, has studied these phenomena for years, with extraordinarily powerful results that you have to SEE to believe!

Click Here ---> for the very best http://skeptiko.com/ FREE paranormal podcast on the internet: Skeptiko. In fact of all the female dog names that are used today they will often show how an owner views their pet as well as the kind of relationship that they have with that animal. The name you choose for your female dog or puppy can in some cases cause others to react either positively or negatively towards the animal when they first meet her.

Certainly when it comes to choosing the name for your dog it is important that you choose one which is going to convey the right kind of positive image to those who are going to be interacting with her.

Currently the most popular of all names for female dogs at this time are as follows:-
Maggie
Molly
Lady
Sadie
Lucy
Daisy
Ginger
Abby
Sasha
Sandy

When it comes to choosing your female dogs name it is important that you take into consideration certain factors which will help to ensure that your choice of name is appropriate.

1. It is best if you try to choose a number that is no more than 2 syllables as those with one syllable can often leave your dog feeling confused. Dogs unfortunately will often find it difficult to differentiate one word from another. Whilst those names that have more than 2 syllables will be very difficult for a dog to learn. Often names with are either too long or can be difficult to say may leave your dog feeling confused and certainly with puppies you may find that they lose interest when you are trying to teach them something. It is therefore best that you choose a name which is not only easy to remember but also easy to say.

2. Never rush in to giving your dog her new name instead of take a few days before you make anything final. During this time it will also give you a chance to learn just what kind of personality your dog has and through their character traits you may actually find a name which suits her perfectly. However it is also best if you choose a number which as they grow older will grow with them. Certainly calling a puppy Frisky is fine but you may find that as they grow older they become much calmer and more docile.

3. It is also important that the female dog names you consider for your pet are ones which you will not be embarrassed to call out in public. Certainly the names that we have listed above are some of the more traditional and would not seem out of place in any park today. However you may find that your dog and others around could become confused if you use a name that is particular common. So try and provide a little uniqueness when it comes to choosing a name for your dog.

Allison Thompson who is an expert author and owner of several different breeds of dogs including a Spanish Mastiff and a Boxer has dedicated time to finding out everything she can to ensure that hers lead healthy and happy lives. The pets themselves don't require much; they just need a pleasing dog name they can identify with when you give them commands. But if you plan to show a purebred dog in competitions, there’s a lot to consider when it's time to choose a dog name for your dog's American Kennel Club certificate. Let's start at the beginning.

The name of the kennel your dog came from is part of his show name. Usually, it's the first part of his name as it appears on the certificate. If you purchased your dog from a show kennel, then the kennel's name should be first, such as: Dexy's Fido. If you bred the dog yourself, then use your own original kennel name. You can also use a combination such as 'Dexy's Fido of (your kennel name here)' so that your dog's name reflects both where he comes from and where he now resides.

Originality is important when choosing a show dog name. The American Kennel Club (AKC) doesn't allow duplicate dog names, and will ask you to choose another name if your pick is already taken.

Unusual dog names with creative spelling attract attention to your dog in a show catalog, while reducing the chance that you've nearly duplicated another dog's name. For example, 'Dexy's Hi-Jac' is a cute play on the word hijack. It's catchy yet original, and offers a great built-in theme for the future if you advertise your dog in breed and show magazines. You could use, "He'll hijack your heart" for your ads. Cute, right?

Once you've selected your dog's 'paper name', the work isn’t over. You'll still need to settle on a shorter dog 'call name' for everyday reference. Using our example of Dexy's Hi-Jac, the name Jack immediately suggests itself for the dog's call name, while directly referring us back to his official dog name on the AKC papers.

So, now that you know the basics of dog naming, you're ready to choose a dog name that will serve you well both at home and in the show ring.

Blake Kritzberg is editor of FavorIdeas. While you can technically change the name of the dog whenever you want, we all know that we are very reluctant to once the name sticks. So it is always best to choose a great name for your dog from the start.

There are many routes one can go with choosing a dog name. Some name their dog using traditional people names, such as Suzie, Charlie, etc. This may cause some confusion though when talking to acquaintances. For example, if you, a close friend, and an acquaintance are talking and you mention your dog by its name (say Alexander), the acquaintance may think you are talking about a person. This is one of many reasons why most people do not choose a people name for their dog.

Another option people use is traditional dog names, such as Rover, Fido, Fluffy, etc. These names are viewed as so overused that people now hardly use them at all! If anything, using a name like this is almost a joke. While there is nothing wrong with using these names, people generally want to give their dog a more special, unique name.

One way to find unique names is searching the Internet. There are many good websites out there that have names for dogs. Most websites also differentiate if the name is commonly used for boy dogs or girl dogs. A lot of these websites have so many names that choosing one may be a bit intimidating! So if you use the Internet, schedule yourself an hour's worth of time, so you will be able to not feel rushed as you go about looking for a name for your new pet.

Besides searching the Internet, another way to name your dog is to think of a name that characterizes your dog. The name may relate to the dog's physical characteristics. For example, if he has a long nose, you may call him Pinocchio. If the dog has a lot of spots, you may choose to name him Spotty.

Another way to name your dog is based on his or her emotional characteristics. Is he or she especially energetic, sleepy, or perhaps playful? These are all methods you could use to figure out a name for your dog.

Often, people choose a funny name for their dog. For example, if their dog start sneezing a lot at first, they might choose to call him Mr. Sniffles. While this may seem humorous at first, keep in mind that you will likely be using this name for fifteen years or so. The novelty of a humorous name often wears out fast.
Likewise, just as you should think twice about a humorous name, also think twice about a long name. You'll likely have to be calling your dog by this name a lot, and it's going to be annoying after awhile to have to use a six or seven syllable name. Most people like to just use names with one or two syllables.

The author writes for a http://www.names-for-dogs.co.uk/ dog names website that has both http://www.names-for-dogs.co.uk/male-dog-names.html male dog names and http://www.names-for-dogs.co.uk/female-girl-dog-names.html female dog names

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Charles_Johnson http://EzineArticles.com/?Choosing-A-Great-Dog-Name&id=980438

Mary D. Whether or not your dog is a puppy or a dog with some years on or even if you bought the dog from someone else. Having a name for your dog pertinent to the dog’s personality is vital.

Now I've brought up some issues about best names for dogs in that first paragraph that may raise your eyebrows but I will explain shortly what all of this means to you as a dog owner.
First things first, you must not confuse your dog. When you say something to your dog it should be clear, concise and to the point. Your dog must not hesitate in your commands and choosing best names for dogs is the reason to insure that your dog reacts the way you want him or her to do.

Dogs react more to vocal commands rather than verbal. I mean the inflection of the words must not be confusing to the dogs mind. The theory for best names for dogs comes from the premise that dogs must understand what and how you are giving commands.
How words sound to them is most important and must not be confused with other words in our language. For instance common words such as "no", "know", "blow” all sound the same but have different meanings altogether.

So if you name your dog "Joe" and you call your dog to come to you, your dog could get confused thinking you said "no" instead of "Joe” because they sound the same. Your dog could get totally confused and not respond favorably.

It's not the dogs fault; don't name your dog a name that could be confusing.
The best names for dog’s theory should go along the lines of naming your dog according to your dog’s personality. Now that may not come as quickly as you want but as you learn about your dog’s personality you could come up with something, I am sure about that.
You could go through a list of favorite names for dogs and see if your dog reacts to any one of these names is another way of selecting a name.

Now one more item of interest in the best names for dogs theory is that if you purchase a dog that already has a name that you should name it differently. Why? Since dogs can't talk you do not know the history that this dog has with his name. If your dog was abused verbally or physically, you would never know. Oh sure, you could call your dog by their predetermined name but do you know if the name has been associated with distrust and anger? No, you don't and you do not want to take the chance that the dog will remember the bad times with that name. For all that matters, your dog might associate you with the same crew that used his or her name before.

So when you get a new puppy or dog, give it a new name. Your dog and you will be happy with the results. Giving a new name to an established dog might take longer to accept but as long as you praise it, love it, and give affection with the new name your dog will respond to you well.
As you can see, giving a name to a dog is one of the most important foundational elements that you can do to insure a complete relationship. Knowing the psychology of a dog names insures that you will have a dog that will be obedient and one that you can be proud of.

If you want your dog to be a command dog then you have to sign up for a free information e-book that will give you some tips that just may astound you. You will want to choose his name well because you and your dog are going to be companions for a long time. The name you select for your dog reflects on you, your dog, and your relationship.

Some key considerations when selecting a unique male dog name are:

* Choose a name that is easy to say and call out, preferably one or two syllables.

* How does your dog behave? What is his personality? You wouldn't name a dog 'Chaos' if he was sweet, gentle, and calm.

* What are his breed, coat color, and size? For instance, you wouldn't name a Chihuahua "Fluffy" (unless you are into irony).

* What is his purpose? Is he going to be a guard dog, a hunting dog, or a traditional household pet?

* What is his breed's origin? For example, if you have a German Shepherd, consider German male dog names like Fritz. If you have an Irish Setter, maybe an Irish dog name like Conan or Conner would suit him.

* Encourage the whole family to take part in naming your dog.

* Give your dog a name that relates to or says something about your own interests. For instance, if you like to hike and camp, perhaps “Scout” would be a good name for your dog.

* Pick out several favorite names, then try them on your new dog for a few days to see what you like and what he seems to respond to.

* Avoid names that could be confused with standard commands like “come,” “stay,” etc.

* Finally, do you love the name? After all, you will be saying it daily (mostly with pleasure, sometimes with exasperation) for the next 10-plus years.

Valerie Goettsch is web master of http://www.My-Favorite-Dog.com My Favorite Dog, a website featuring dozens of articles and information on where to find the best of everything for your dog, from flea meds to beds, training and designer clothes.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Valerie_Goettsch http://EzineArticles.com/?Unique-Male-Dog-Names:-How-to-Pick-Your-Dogs-Name&id=84284

Mary D. Evangeline Samuel

You have been dreaming about the perfect puppy that you want. Along the way, it could have years, you have changed your mind as to what kind of dog you want. You may have thought of a big dog, like a Chow or a Labrador, and later you may have thought of a smaller dog, but the time has come that you have made your choice. You called the kennel or person and have made arrangements to pick up your pup. Have you already picked out a name, or are you waiting to see the pup to decide on the name. What do you look for in a name for your new member of the the family?

Do you name your pup after a family member? I do not think that will go very well at your next family get together.

Maybe your dog has a black patch on his eye, so you may call him Patch.
Or like the cat Socks that was black and had white feet.

Are there specific names out there just for dogs?

Can you choose any name you want to?

Why not? This is your baby and you can give any whimsical or fancy or run of the mill name you decide to.

I had a white dog named Sandy and a black dog named Pearlie.

My mom was given a black Scottish Terrier to keep till Christmas for my sister-in-law, so she did not know what to call him, so she called him Blackie. But Christmas came and my brother told my mom that Blackie was hers. Well, we just could not leave him with that name. I decided that if we changed his name, it should not be too different or he may not respond to it. We decided on the name Lucky. Lucky liked his name.

In books we find names like Rover and Spot, but in real life we have some interesting names for our dogs.

My nephew has a pit bull pup named Bentley.

My daughter named her pup Kate. We all knew that she loved Kate Spade purses and so when Kate was neutered, we said she was now Kate Spayed. She did not think it was funny.
Kate is a beautiful Morkie and does not know that she is not a human. She has great personality and we call her by every endearing word there is and she responds to them all.
So is there a special set of rules you have to abide by? No. You can name them anything you want, but within reason. You do not want to give them a name you cannot pronounce or is so bad that you cannot say it front of others. Remember your pup is your baby and choose their name with the same care and love you are going to show the lucky pup that gets to go home with you. For this reason, we can be extremely confusing to our pets by associating their name with a myriad of different desired responses.

In order to produce a desired response from calling a pet's name, it is important to be consistent with how it is being used. Dogs create strong associations with many things, like sticks, balls, food bowls, or leashes.

Almost every dog gets excited be the sound of their leash, and we all know why. They're going for a walk! Similarly, dogs develop very strong associations from verbal cues, but if they are confused by the usage of certain words they might not know how to respond. Think about all of the ways your pet's name is used on a daily basis. This might include "Stay, Fido, Stay", "Fido Sit," "Fido NO," "Fetch Fido," or "Come, Fido!" All of these commands and many more like them have very different meanings and desired responses. Dogs love to please their masters, but if they are unsure about what is expected of them, they are extremely unlikely to respond correctly.

How many dog owners have you heard screaming their dog's name, while Fido is trotting along, ignoring their owner completely? This is probably because the dog is either unsure that their owner is trying to communicate with them, or perhaps they have a bad connotation with their name. If a dog hears its name dropped in conversation or used casually all of the time, it becomes desensitized to it and might even think it doesn't have anything to do with them. Also, many owners give their dogs the impression that their name means they are in trouble. "Fido, STOP!" tells the dog that their name is a reprimand.

Most people want dogs to come when they call their names, and in order to accomplish this, several things must be consistent. First, their name should be associated with pleasant things like food, treats, belly rubs, and toys. Instead of using a dog's name during a reprimand, you should use specific single salable words to communicate, like "Stop." "No," and "Down." Coming to an owner should be joyful to a dog, and keeping their name associated with positive things is half the battle. Rewarding a dog for coming to its name will also make a noticeable difference. If a dog knows it will receive a treat every time they come to their master, they will initially come for the treat, but eventually they will associate their name so strongly with returning to their master that they will do it without a treat. This, accompanied with emotional praise, will strongly influence dogs to respond well to their names.

It is important to remember that K-9 brains are much simpler than ours and cannot associate words in context, causing owners to confuse their pets. Be consistent, only associate a dogs name with the right things. Not only will it make leaving the park much easier, it might even save its life.

Dean Burton is the owner of MyDreamPuppy.com, a leading online petfinder service provider. In your case the Greyhound dog. More often than not what comes next is thinking of dog names even before other important considerations. This can tell you how important a dog’s name is to a dog owner. But most people are not aware that the dog names that they choose can have a strong impact on their relationship with their pet and has implications to dog health in general.

Dog names that are harsh sounding can be stressful to your dog, particularly for the more sensitive breeds, which you’ve probably discovered is a trait of the sweet Greyhound dog. A name can be harsh sounding due either to the letters used in the name or the meaning of the name. For example if you say the name Asha as opposed to Buck you can feel the effect on yourself, imagine the effect it would have on a sensitive little Greyhound puppy or shy newly adopted dog. This can have implications when training your dog as well because positive reinforcement will always give you the best results and using a name that is inviting and pleasing to your dog is a form of positive reinforcement. Ultimately training using positive reinforcement will not be a stressful experience thus contributing to over all dog health.
The best way to pick dog names is to choose names that feel and sound pleasant to you and end in vowels so it ends softly. Even better is a name that starts with a vowel as well. Don’t worry if you want to get their attention, even a gentle sounding name will get the attention of your Greyhound dog when you mean business, the tone of your voice will speak volumes -so to speak. Various other dog health issues will be discussed throughout this web site see the menu for direction.

Gabriele's website [http://www.1st-greyhound-dog-care.com/]http://www.1st-greyhound-dog-care.com was created for the appreciation of this unique breed. Choosing the perfect name is not easy and most Pit Bull owners base the name they give their dogs on their own ideal of what persona the dog should represent.

Unfortunately, Pit Bull owners choose some lousy names and this article will share how you can avoid choosing a crappy name and find the perfect name for your Pit Bull.

Many Pit Bull owners choose names like Bear or Tank or Bull
or some other name that reflects the dogs strength and size.

Other owners, well, they go to the other side of the coin and choose names like softy, sugar, honey, or fluffy.

What you choose to name your dog is entirely up to you but here are a few things you may want to consider when you pick your Pit Bulls name...

1. One or two syllables. The easier it is to say the easier you
will be able to use it. Your dog will learn to respond quicker
to shorter names. This is based on training using shorter
words.

2. The dog likes it. You can see when you dog likes a name. Say
the name in a normal voice and see if your dog responds. If they ignore you, choose another name. The name should get a response without having to act like a fruitcake to entice your dog to pay attention.

3. Unique. I love unique Pit Bull names. Tank is not unique. Nor is Bear or Killer or Fluffy. Pick a name that has value to you and your dog but is unique at the same time.

Choosing the perfect name for your Pit Bull takes time and if you follow the criteria above and look around the web for lists of dog names you'll be able to find a name that suits your dog and your tastes.

In summary, choose a name that has a purpose other than telling the world your dog is strong or love-able. Names are how people tell a lot about animals so take your time to choose a name
that fits your Pit Bull.

For more information about [http://www.Pitbulllovers.com/dog-names.html]Pit Bull names try visiting [http://www.Pitbulllovers.com/]PitBullLovers.com. Every time
you call his name, he wallows in shame. You've banished him
to the lowest level of dog name hell - you've named your Lab
"Blackey."

Any four-year-old can explain that a dog's name should
reflect something about him - the way he looks, the way he
acts, what he likes to eat… something. So most
four-year-olds will take the next most obvious step - naming
a black dog Blackey... or Smokey... or something equally
inane.

The thought that so many grown adults were not able to
muster more creativity could undermine our society's basic
faith in democracy. So let's hope that the over-abundance
of such uninspiring monikers is the work of children -
parents' having left the honor of naming the family pet to
junior or sissy. While common, this type of delegation is
rarely a good idea. Your dog will associate related events and see a relationship between contiguous impressions. He gets excited when you get the leash out, right? Sure, because the leash means a walk--a fun event. When you know very well that your dog forms many strong associations, why believe or assume he won't make similar assumptions and learn similar things regarding his name?

For example, I say: "Rover, Come!" and "Rover, Stay!" away from me. The next time I say Rover, do I expect him to break towards me or run away? Because I was just silly enough to teach him it means both! Look at how silly I can be: "Rover, Shut Up!" "Get Down, Rover!" "Rover, NO!" These are great ways to teach him that the word Rover means a reprimand. I then say: "Honey, Rover was so cute today! When Sam visited, Rover played so nicely! Even Carl liked Rover!" Rover just got ignored for paying attention to his name three times because I wasn't talking to him!

What have I done wrong so far here? First, I taught Rover that his name doesn't mean him, so he can ignore it. Second, I taught him it means punishment. Third, I taught him it means to stay away from me. But if he doesn't come to me EVERY time I call him, I'll rip his lips off! Do you see how we confuse our dogs?

One of the most common desires of dog owners is to have their dog come when they call him. This is much easier and more reliably successful if you first remove any reason he has NOT to come when called. If the name means reprimands or to stay away from you, you sure gave him reasons not to come when called!

Here's the answer: Use a dog's name only when you are directly addressing that dog in a positive way. Say it when giving the dog meals, treats, love, massages, petting, walks and whatever he really likes. And the ONLY command you say it with is "Come!" because coming to you should be among your dog's greatest joys, so that's consistent with all the other positive things his name is linked with. If the ONLY times your dog hears his name is "Yes, Rover! Good Rover! Rover, here's a treat! Have a massage, Rover!" how does he NOT come when you call him?

A very effective way to verbally correct a dog and avoid his name is to use specific words. "Off!" means stay on the floor or get off of whatever he's on. "Quiet!" means to be silent--not be bark or howl. "Drop!" means to leave something alone or drop it from his mouth.

So now you don't need a name! If one or two dogs is/are barking, "Quiet!" not only tells them what to do, it tells all of them exactly who you're addressing! The quiet dogs know you mean the loudmouths! Same with Off, Drop, Back, Out or whatever direction you say.

The point is very simple: Don't use your dog's name to mean contradictory or diametrically opposed things. Use it to mean only good things directed to that dog, and make coming to you a very good thing. I've done this for decades with dozens of my own and thousands of client dogs all over the world. I KNOW it works very well!

And dogs with character traits as strong as those of the Boxer breed deserved to have strong names as well.

That does not mean that you have to choose from Boxer dog names borrowed from the ranks of ancient German kings and queens, although Attila, Otto, Clovis, and Clothdile are certainly fitting.

And there are the names of the great legendary and operatic German figures, which as Boxer dog names would do justice to your fearless companion: Sigmund, Volund, Siegfried, or Fafner for your male puppy, or if you have a female, Brunhilde or Freya.

The physical characteristics of the Boxer breed, with its torso of solid muscle and the jaw strength to hold a charging bull do seem to lend themselves to an equally strong Boxer dog names.

But belying its strength and courage is the Boxer breed’s fun-loving, sociable personality. Boxers, more than any other dogs, retain their puppy playfulness long after they have physically matured. So you might consider Boxer dog names reflecting your dog’s comic side.

Martin Schneider is a German comedian best known for his large mouth and expressive face, characteristics he shares with every Boxer dog. So how about “Schneider”? You can easily find names and pictures of other German comedians, both male and female, and see if any of them are a good match for your canine clown.

Keeping in mind that, if your Boxer puppy lives its expected life span of ten to twelve years, you are likely to call it by name between thirty-five and forty thousand times, you might look for Boxer dog names that are easy to pronounce.

You may be an aviation fan, and really want to call your Boxer “Baron von Richtoffen” after the great World War I German fighter pilot. But if you do, the odds are that very soon your dog will be answering to “Baron” or “Ricky”. “Baron” suggests a very dignified dog, while “Ricky” does not. So make sure that what you actually end up calling your boxer is as good a choice of Boxer dog names as the one you originally picked.

And if you intend to register your Boxer puppy, you will have to come up with a unique name which has no more than twenty-five characters. That means it will have to be different in some way from all the thousands of Boxer dog names belonging to previously registered animals.

So take time to get to know your Boxer puppy before letting it become attached to a name that does not really capture its spirit. Your Boxer’s name should be as special as you dog!

Do you want to know find out loads more about how to train and raise you Boxer the proper way? Lets face it, this breed is one, if not THE most popular dog breed in the world. And because of this it deserves a name that's as special as the dog itself.

Sure, you could come up with any dog name, but why not try to find a name that actually fits? A name that reflects this dogs intelligence, sociable nature, or even it's physical characteristics like it's color.

Since we believe that special dogs deserve special names, when coming up with the Labrador Retriever dog names shown below, we chose 3 lab name categories that we felt would help you to think a bit out of the box when it comes to selecting the best Labrador Retriever names. These categories are…

General Lab Names…

These general names were chosen and suggested simply because we felt they would sound good on a lab. We didn't feel that just any dog name would fit this particular breed. As an example, Fifi would be a great Poodle name, but not on a lab. Here's a few dog name suggestions that we thought might be a good match…

Cassidy: This name has a friendly, easy going sound to it, and it seems to be a good match with this breeds temperament.

Charisma: Somebody who has charisma is someone with personal magnetism. If you've noticed that your lab is drawing a lot of attention, then the name Charisma might be an appropriate match.

Fetch: A good name match for a dog that’s a Retriever.

Jazz: A smooth and cool sounding name, and one that might appeal to a music loving owner.

Ricochet: For the lab that’s all over the place!

Other General Lab Name Ideas…Amanda, Bailey, Bandanna, Boone, Cabo, Caboodle, Cha-Cha, Chelsea, Cheyenne, Cody, Denali, Hailey, Kahuna, Maui, Rio, Sierra, Tango, Tiara

Black or Chocolate Lab Names…

Should you be the proud owner of a Retriever whose color is black or chocolate, here's some name suggestions and a list of names that might be a good fit for it's dark color…

Java: For an energetic black lab that doesn't need caffeine.

Kahlua: A good match for a chocolate lab whose owner is fond of either this famous drink, or Hawaii from where it originates, or both!

Panther: For the lab that's as stealthy and sleek as a black panther.

Sable: Named after the highly valued black sable fur, the lab given this name should be one that carries itself well and that knows its special.

Other Black Or Chocolate Lab Name Ideas…Aurora, Coco, Ebony, Eightball, Espresso, Hoodlum, Luna, Midnight, Nighthawk, Phantom, Raven, Salem, Shadow, Star, Storm, Taboo

Yellow Lab Names…

Blondes have more fun! So giving your yellow lab a name that highlights its beautiful coloration will make it stand paws above the rest. Here's a few naming suggestions and a list of names after things that are bright or yellow…

Butter: Don't laugh, but I encountered a yellow lab recently who owned this very memorable and unique name. I'll never forget having met Butter!

Marilyn: For the blonde lab whose owner is a Marilyn Monroe fan. This sultry pooch draws the attention of everyone as it enters the room one hip at a time!

Sundance: This energetic dog brightens everyone's day.

Other Yellow Lab Name Ideas…Amber, Autumn, Blondie, Chiquita, Daisy, Ember, Garbo, Goldie, Harlow, Meadow, Omelet, Paris, Sandy, Sahara, Savanna, Sunny, Zsa Zsa

When looking for Labrador Retriever Names, they're easy to find when you consider your labs temperament and physical characteristics when choosing a name. If you take care to choose the right one, not only will your dog appreciate it, but he will also attract more attention…thus more petting, playing and treats!

When Richard Livitski isn't busy digging up Labrador Retriever Names, he's working on his dog names website http://www.dog-names-and-more.com where dog names and puppy names in all shapes and sizes can be found.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Richard_Livitskihttp://EzineArticles.com/?Finding-Cool-And-Unique-Labrador-Retriever-Names&id=499464

Mary D.

On the other hand, if you're a stranger, you'll be lucky to have four fingers left when you try, because it might just bite one off. This is because of the Chihuahuas extreme loyalty to those he's familiar with, and his not appreciating what he feels might be an infringement of his territory.

Chihuahuas can also be an adventure to own simply by virtue of their attitudes. Hang around one for any length of time and you'll notice that this little dog doesn't seem to know that it's little! Because of this, they're often referred to as the little dog, with the big dog attitude. They can be aggressive toward other pets, and can bark up a storm over the littlest thing, which in most cases is bigger than the actual dog itself.

Even though the above mentioned characteristics can be interesting to say the least, more endearing qualities are those of the Chihuahuas extreme loyalty to those he's familiar with. Also, this puppy has a high energy level and spunk, that can brighten anyone's day.

Because of these diverse qualities, naming this pooch can prove a bit of a challenge. Should you choose any dog name? Or look for Chihuahua names that best reflect it's small size, or even it's humorous big dog attitude?

Since we felt this unique pooch deserves a unique name, we've come up with some Chihuahua dog name suggestions that cover both it's small size and it's big attitude. Here's some ideas from our dog names website...

Dog Names That Sound Small…

Bambi, Bonbon, Bugsy, Butterball, Button, Cuddles, Doodle, Gumball, Junior, Kewpie, Laptop, Munchkin, Nibbles, Nipper, Peanut, Peewee, Puddles, Putt-Putt, Squeaky, Squirt, Tinkerbell

Dog Names That Sound Big…

Attila, Big Shot, Boomer, Bruno, Bunyan, Butkus, Capone, Genghis, Grizzly, Hercules, Hulk, Jaws, Kahuna, Kong, Manley, Moose, Muscles, Rambo, Samson, Sarge, Stallion, Sumo, Terminator, Ulysses, Wookie, Yukon, Zeus

In closing, it's important to remember that when naming any dog, Chihuahua or otherwise, not to give him a name that might cause him to be mocked or made fun of. When searching for the perfect male or female Chihuahua name, these names were suggested hoping to get your creative juices flowing, and start you off on the right paw.

When Richard Livitski isn't busy digging up Chihuahua Names, he's working on his dog names website http://www.dog-names-and-more.com where dog names as well as grooming, training, and dog care tips can be found

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Richard_Livitskihttp://EzineArticles.com/?Chihuahua-Names:-Cute-Dog-Names-For-The-Little-Guy&id=480267

Mary D.

Valerie Goettsch is webmaster of http://www.my-favorite-dog.com featuring articles and information on good dog names, dog beds, pet meds and more.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Valerie_Goettschhttp://EzineArticles.com/?How-to-Pick-a-Good-Dog-Name:-Finding-a-Unique-and-Fun-Name-for-Your-Pet&id=327576

Mary D. If your pet dog is going to be just a family pet and you have no intentions of trying to train them to be a show dog. I personally like to stick with simple, one syllable names. Your dog is going to learn several voice commands during its lifetime, and it's always best to keep their names simple. For example, I personally have three dogs and their names are Norm, Bob and Gus. Now if you decide that your dog is going to be a show dog, there's a little bit more to consider when choosing a name.

Usually, if you have purchased your dog from a reputable kennel, the name of the kennel becomes the first part of your dog's name. An example of that would be something like Pendergrass Norm. If you break your dog yourself and obviously you would want to use your own kennel name. Keep in mind that the AKC also known as American kennel club does not allow duplicate names. So you will want to be as original as possible. If for some odd reason, you have selected a name that is already in use. They will ask you to change your dog's name.
If you decide to go the show dog route, you'll want to pick as flamboyant and original name is possible to attract attention to your dog during the show. This will reduce the chance of you duplicating another dog's name. A good example of this would be something like Pendergrass Liberty Bell, and then when your dog is at home rather than calling at Pendergrass Liberty Bell. You can do shorten it down to Bell. That keeps it simple for you as well as your dog.

Now, if your dog just going to be the everyday family pet. Like I mentioned before, single syllable names are the best route to go. I base this on the training that you and your dog will receive in the commands they will have to learn. A name like Gus or Bob is easy for the dog to remember and recognize just like the commands they will learn such as sit, stay, come and heel. Have fun with picking a name, used people names, if you want to. Some folks like to name their dogs after their favorite beverage. Others like to name their dog based on their dog personality. Our dog norm got his name because he reminded us of Norm on the show Cheers.
You now know the basics of naming a dog in with these helpful tips should be a will choose a name that will suit your pet. Not only at home, but in the ring.

About the Author
For more information on dogs and dog supplies, please visit our site http://www.pet-super-store.com/dog-supplies.php

Mary D. Archaeological digs from around the world have given us proof that mans best friend was given a name. We know many ancient Egyptian dogs’ names from leather collars as well as reliefs, stele and statuary. They included such names as Brave One, Reliable, Good Herdsman, North-Wind, Antelope and even "Useless". Other names come from the dog’s appearance, such as Blue or Snow, while still other dogs were given numbers for names, such as "Seven". Many of the names seem to represent endearment, while others convey merely the dog’s abilities or capabilities.

Naming a dog today has become a challenge as more and more people become dog owners. We all want our pet to have that unique name which no one else has. However there are certain common sense guidelines that should be followed when naming your beloved puppy.

1. Remember, you will be using and yelling this name thousands of times in the life of your dog, if not hundreds a day. Choose a name that rolls off the tongue easily. Most trainers and breeders suggest a two syllable name. Your puppy will find it easier to learn and you will have an easier time saying it.

2. Choose a name that stays away from common command words (sit, go, down, fetch etc). Name like Brown, Sitah, Bogo, Fletch can confuse a puppy being trained to behave, as well as older dogs whose health and hearing are fading.

3. Remember, your dog will be with you for a long time, so a name that seemed cute and adorable while he was a puppy may not be such a great name in her later years. You will need to guide small children should they be allowed in on the process as they will always go for the cute and embarrassing.

4. Using your dog’s unique appearance, abilities and capabilities is a great way to come up with a name. Your Beagle could be Patches, your Rhodesian Ridgeback could be Big Red or Lion and your new Shar Pei could be named Wrinkles.

5. Let your dog decide her own name by narrowing down the choices to a few, then calling the names to your dog. Whichever one he comes to could be the one. Conversely, you could place the chosen names on separate paper and let your dog decide by sitting on the name she wants.

However you decide to choose the right dog name for your new pet, be comfortable in the fact that you are not alone in the difficult task of choosing a name. just remember to choose the name you and your dog are most comfortable with and you won’t go wrong.

About the author: Mike Mathews is a Dog owner and has shown his dogs in the past. Keep it short and sweet. You should keep your dog’s name to one or two syllables so that it’s easy for it to understand. The longer a name is, the more confusing it will be for the puppy.

2.) End the name in a long vowel. This also aids in the dog’s recognizing its name. It will help to get the dogs attention when you call his name.

3.) Do not give your dog a human name. When you give it a human name, you make the dog one of “us”. And you’ll soon start treating it like a human and less like a dog.

4.) Naturally you’ll want to stay away from names that sound like obedience commands, like “sit”, “down”, “stay”, “come”, etc. Imagine giving the command, “Bit, sit.” You can see how the puppy would get confused.

5.) Finally, you should pick a name that you like! You can have it based on all sorts of themes and interests (cars, sports, hobbies, etc) that you are passionate about. Why not go with one of those?

Remember, these are just guidelines. You will know when you have picked out the perfect name for your new puppy.

Todd runs the website The Doggy Dispatch where you can get a free dog names report containing over 58 pages of themed dog names you can use for your brain storming. Right now, Google is the most important search engine on the net or, at least, the most well known.

Both of them, the dog and de search engine, are highly adept at finding things. But why not call it Yahoo! After all, Yahoo was one of the first ones and also the most well known. So my dog would be “the number one”, and those that are first are the best. Now, which one sound better to you?

Do you feel more comfortable saying: “come here Yahoo”, or “come here Google”? The decision will probably be different for everyone. They are part of our culture, our history. There is much mention of them in Irish stories and myths. The tallest dog in the world is the Irish Wolfhound, bred originally to hunt stags and wolfs. Well known dog breeds from Ireland include the Irish Red and White Setters the Irish Water Spaniel, the Kerry Blue. We have the terriers: The Irish Terrier, the Wheaten Terrier, and The Glen of Imaal Terrier. The Irish dog breeds mentioned were bred for working. They are hardy, intelligent, and courageous, and very good looking dogs.

We have made a list of Irish names that would suit a dog. We tend to put a lot of effort and thought into picking a name for our dogs, one that is pleasing to the ear, and one we won't be embarrassed yelling in public. I'd much rather call out "Buddy, come," at the dog park than "Stay, Slobberchops," wouldn't you? By some accounts, you'll be saying your dog's name at least 35,000 times over the life of your pet, so you'll want to choose one that you'll be happy long after the fad "male dog name of the year" fades away.

One idea is to name your dog after a famous male that you like or can relate to, either in history, movies, or pop culture. For example, take the name "Duke." Famous people named Duke include legendary jazz pianist Duke Ellington. Duke was also the name of ultimate movie tough guy John Wayne. And for TV trivia buffs, it was the name of the hound dog in the TV show "The Beverly Hillbillies."

You could also name your dog after a personality trait. Is he constantly bumping into things and knocking them over? Perhaps "Buster" would be a good name. If he is strong and playful, "Rocky" might be a good fit. Is he always stealing your socks? "Bandit" may be just the right name for him.

Others like to name their dog after their favorite alcoholic beverage, like "Bud" or "Buddy" or car "Beemer," or athlete "Jordan." (Funny how this always seems to work better for male dog names versus girl dogs.)

It may be interesting to pick a male dog name based on the meaning of the name and how it relates to your dog. "Beauregard," for instance, means "handsome face." The name "Liam" means determined protector. And who can forget "Frodo," from the Lord of the Rings, for your loyal male furry friend.

Choosing a foreign name reflecting your dog's heritage is another option. For example, if you have an Old English Sheepdog, you could name your dog using a traditional English name such as Addison, Barclay or Grover. If you have a Scottish Terrier, then "Tavis" or "Finley," both good Scottish names, may be appropriate.

You may like a name that has a humorous twist. If your dog is a little on the chubby side, "Gordito" might suit him. A little irony might also be fun. What about "Botox" for a Shar-pei (which has naturally wrinkled skin from head to tail). But be careful here: what may be topical at the moment might be passé in a few years (think of all those little girl babies named Britney).

Whatever name you choose, keep a few things in mind:

Dog names should be short, preferably one or two syllables. It's easier for you to call out and easier for your dog to understand.

Dog names should not sound similar to commands. "Joe" sounds too close to "no," for example. This can create confusion for your dog.

Dog names should not sound like any other name within the family or there will be lots of mix-ups.

Will that cute, exotic name or trendy for your puppy still suit your male dog after he is all grown up?

Valerie Goettsch is webmaster of My Favorite Dog featuring articles and info on male dog names, dog breeds, pet health, meds and more.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Valerie_Goettschhttp://EzineArticles.com/?Naming-Your-Male-Dog&id=336541

Mary D. After searching long and hard at the shelters, thru the newspaper and even enlisting friends and family in your search, you've found the right dog! So what’s next? Giving him/her a proper name of course!

So you think to yourself, just any ol name won't do. It’s got to be unique, something different! Well, allow me to give you a few dog naming categories that will hopefully help you to come up with some really novel names for your four legged friend.

First though, when coming up with a name keep in mind a few things to watch out for.

1. Stay away from names that might be potentially embarrassing to both you AND your dog. The name "Stinky" might be cute at first, but once the joke gets old, think of how you'll feel a year from now when you have to call "Stinky" home at night. Embarrassing names could also apply to negative words that might rhyme with your dogs name.

2. There's been a tendency in recent years to give dogs human names.

3. If possible, keep the name to one or two syllables. Dogs not only learn it quicker, but it makes them easier to train as well.

On with the names!...

In this article I've listed just 3 of the many dog name categories that might help you to think a bit outside the box when coming up with great puppy names.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Richard_Livitskihttp://EzineArticles.com/?Dog-Names:-Choosing-The-Right-One,-The-First-Time&id=306666

Mary D.
